Devils in Dark Houses is a good collection of stories connected by a pair of detectives, Martinez and Shirdon. They are working cases and working thru their own life issues along the way. I really liked how the stories progressed along with the two detectives.
The Eye That Binds – I had read this one previously as a standalone novella. The internet, reality TV and a truly messed up protagonist. A well done and dark tale. 3.5 Stars
Each Castle Its King – Cal and his wife move into a little fixer upper in Oregon. It needs some work and quite possibly an exorcist. This one felt clunky and disjointed to me and never really gelled for whatever reason. Ended up just ok. 2 Stars.
Nostri – Dumpster diving and Roman philosophy goes together like peas and carrots. Like Senz and Em. A solid short and interesting premise that stumbled a bit at the end but was nonetheless entertaining. 3.5 Stars
Devils in Dark Houses – A good murder mystery with a hint of the supernatural. Plus, a Hound, Bone Man and Great White Aliens. My favorite in the collection. 4 Stars
All 4 of these novellas are very different in theme and feel. I dug that about the collection and also enjoyed the detectives that stitched the tales together. At times the writing here was crisp and tight and other times felt a bit choppy. Overall, this one works out to 3.25 Stars.*As a member of the DarkFuse Readers Group, I received an advanced copy of this e-book in exchange for an honest review.
